April

A dancefloor belter this month. Jimmy Vick staring in an R'n'B killer. You gotta listen...

March

Nitta Rossi was born in Bournmouth UK. This is her first single from '65 when still a teenager. Its a heartbreaking beat ballad with a lot of class. Give it a play...

February

February brings us a rousing R'n'B duet from Denna Johnson and Rick Davis. " Who Me? Yeah You!" is a dancefloor filler, all lined for a play at March's OOS. Enjoy...

January

Perhaps one of the best Dutch 45's ever made. Bonny St. Claire, sometime actress and dutch tabloid celebrity made a couple of top singles back in the day. Here's the wonderful "I Surrender". Enjoy...

December

Epic Splendor were most probably a Capitol records studio band put together for their new subsidary label. The a side is a pretty cool blue-eyed soul tune, but it's this slice of psych that were interested in this month. Trip out...

November

Here's a storming two-sider from Jimmy Holiday on the Diplomacy record label. Hailing from Mississippi this is one of his more driving tunes. A must for any dancefloor...

October

Billy is from Liverpool and was friends with The Beatles, and had quite a few hit singles during his time. However it's this freakbeat b-side with his Mancunian band The Dakotas which interest me here. It begins like the Wig-Wags and goes into trippy moments and back to beat. Great stuff...

September

The Foundations were a sixties soul band from London. Remarkable at the time for comprising of Black and white musicians. Here's a b-side I came across recently that shows the beat colours. It's a great driving sound which would suit a dancefloor near you...

August

Suggested by OOS dj Der Wolfshund the last time he played OOS. It's a driving organ lead monster from famous Dutch pianist Rob Hoeke and his group. A real gem...

July

Number one in Australia in 1969. This is a psych masterpiece which reportedly is the first use of 'flange' on a record. Costing a fortune to record and involving ace Aussie psych band The Groop as well. It's a delight...

June

Brainwashed is by David Clayton Thomas who would later find fame with Blood, Sweat and Tears. Here's a Canadian single from 1966 which even made it to number 1 in the Canadian charts. It's manic, angry and brilliant...

May

As OUT OF SIGHT is based in The Netherlands I thought it about time that we have a '45 of the Month from a Nederbeat band. Here's Chapter II from The Hague with perhaps a proto-power pop come psych tune which is brilliant. Called "East of my Place" it hails from 1966, and sounds fuzzy and great to this day...

April

A top psych 45 from a band originally from Manchester. J.C. Heavy were formed in '69 and they soon decided to ply their trade in Germany with the prospect of a few festivals. They stayed there for a few years and made two great singles. Both a and b-sides are top drawer on the 45. But it's "That Woman's Mind" which I've gone for...

March

Here's a mighty tune from the Mighty Cravens with Rex Garvin. A creeping , grooving 45 with just the right amount of menace to set the nightclub alive. Great stuff...

February

A psych masterclass from Band of Wyndand. It's a Californian single I've been after for a long time. It's got it all...

January

This piece of German pop is laced with some wild fuzz guitar. Making it our favourite Freakbeat tune this month. Worked like a dream on the dancefloor. Take a listen...

December

Here's Ella Fitzgerald doing a great cover of "Get Ready", perhaps equaling her sublime version of "These Boots are made for Walking", this too lights up any dancefloor...

November

This is what in my opinion is everything what Northern Soul is about. Euphoria and a driving beat is the order of the day on this single from 1969 by the M.V.P's. Splash the talc...

October

Here's a cool mod r'n'b groover from Chuck Wright. You can almost hear the mohair suits shuffling in the far background. Superb tune...

September

Paul Nicholas although better known for his musicals and television roles (not to mention more than a few awful records) did manage to make one Mod monster of a tune. That tune is a cover of Richie Haven's "Run Shaker Life". It's brilliant and it's heading for the OOS dancefloor as we speak...

August

A bit of Boogaloo this month with a 45 from that giant of the scene Ray Barretto. "Right On" is a rousing dancefloor firestarter that isn't out of place on any discerning mod night...

July

Here's a great piece of exotic freakbeat from that French sixties siren, Brigitte Bardot. "Tu Veux Ou Tu Veux Pas" ('Do you want it or don't you'). It starts a little off kilter and then builds into a class dance-floor mover. Do you want it or don't you?...

June

Ric Martin with a wonderful Popcorn tune that does the business on the dancefloor. Perfect in the heat of the night as well as at an end. Shuffle your feet to this one…

May

This month's single is a brooding r'n'b monster from 1962 by Lee Rogers. His first solo single and what a cracker it is. Give it a spin below...

April

April's has everything. Music for the body as well as the head. A freakbeat, Psych dancefloor monster. From an Orlando band called We The People. This is their fourth single from 1966, incorporating a hand-made instrument from an elderly neighbour it certainly makes a unique impact. Superb!...

March

The '45 for March is a grimy creeping classic. Covered famously by The Cramps the original is even better. Telling the tale of a sexual preditor roaming the dark streets of the city. What is there not to like. From 1962 this one is always a winner...

February

This month's'45 is a brilliant r'n'b single from Douglas 'Jocko' Henderson on Wand. "Blast off to Love" begins in an onimous fashion with the sound of a rocket getting nearer. A rocket is a good metaphor for this tune as it then erupts into a mod r'n'b floorfiller...

January

The first '45 of 2014 is a brooding garage monster from 1967. The band is The Uncalled For from Tennessee, the tune is "Do Like Me". A brilliant garage tune as I'm sure you'll agree. Give it a spin..

December

December's forty-five is freakbeat monster from Tony Ritchie. Produced and partly written by Mikki Dallon, Ritchie does a stirling vocal with top fuzzy guitar throughout. One for the dancefloor and the mind...

November

This month's fort-five is a top r'n'b/mod floorfiller from Freddy King. I've only recently come across "Now I've got a woman", but it has rarely been off my turnatable ever since...

October

Ted Taylor here with barnstorming tune called "Help the Bear". As Ted sings: "If you see me in a bear-fight, don't help me help the bear". You know this man means business. In fact there are great lyrics throughout all concerning how hard old Ted is. You gotta love it...

September

This one has been getting under my skin of late. From 1961 a top popcorn number from Count Yates, complete with monkey noises. One for the box to be sure...

August

Here's a psyched-out brooding killer for August from Tommy Vann and The Proffessionals. A song quite out of character from the normally soulful Tommy Vann. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the mighty and very eccentric English producer Joe Meek was the production "supervisor". Great stuff...

July

In 1965 Tennesee Ernie Ford made a new version of his hit "Sixteen Tons". Sometimes termed the go-go version, it's a real floorwinner. Apparently Ernie didn't care for the new version, can't say I agree...

June

"Is It On, Is It Off" - The Bit A Sweet(MGM). I bought this quite a few years ago now. It never lets me down this one. A powerful freakbeat classic that sets any dancefloor alight. Not only is this a classic track but the b-side is "Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind". How good is that! Here's a nice video of the tune, give it a spin today...

May

Here is a superb psych dancer from The Cherry Slush. As soon as the needle hits the record the fuzz kicks in and the action begins. A joy for all hipcats everywhere.

April

This month's '45 is one of my favourites. From the very off it slides in with a cool, oh so cool vocal intro and you know you're in good hands. Just when your getting settled, from out of sight comes a barn-storming sax-led groove, then when it relents it ends with those same cool, oh so cool vocals..."He's the man!"

March

Bill Medley, he of The Righteous Brothers and "Dirty Dancing" fame with an R'n'b cracker from 1965.
